Scaling and polishing is a routine professional cleaning. Scaling removes the hardened plaque (tartar) and deposits that build up on teeth and along the gumline, and polishing then smooths the tooth surfaces and lifts surface stains for a fresh, clean finish.

Routine cleaning vs deep cleaning

A routine scaling and polishing cleans above and just below the gumline and is recommended for most patients every six months. If there is established gum disease with deeper pockets, a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) may be advised instead — we will tell you which you need after examining your gums.
